  • How to Plan a Proposal in Lapland - Marion Lefevre

Are you dreaming of getting engaged in Lapland but don't know where to start? Read this guide and start dreaming your proposal during your trip in Finland! ELOPEMENT ADVENTURE SESSION WEDDING GUIDE Plus GALLERIES ABOUT CONTACT PRICING Plus The ultimate guide to get engaged in Finnish Lapland. HOW TO PLAN A PROPOSAL IN LAPLAND Lapland is the unique bland of quiet wilderness and cosy atmosphere, creating the perfect romantic setting to ask your love in marriage. CONSIDERING TO PROPOSE IN LAPLAND? Lapland untouched wilderness foster genuine moments in complete intimacy. Getting engaged in Lapland is ideal for couples seeking an adventure that celebrate love and connection in their purest form. Let Lapland’s pristine beauty bear witness to your love story as you propose amongst stunning landscapes, an adventure you’ll cherish for a lifetime. I’m Marion, a local photographer, dedicated to helping couples create meaningful marriage proposals. I craft and photograph genuine experiences that let your love shine while embracing the magic of Lapland’s beauty. 1. WHY THE WILDERNESS IS PERFECT FOR A PROPOSAL. In the quiet embrace of the wild, every tree, every mountain, and every star feels like it’s part of a grand design, crafted just for that moment. The rustle of leaves or the soft ripple of a lake replaces the need for music, the forest or the ethereal glow of the snow outshine any man-made decor. In nature’s sanctuary, simplicity becomes elegance, and the wilderness itself bears witness to your love. 2. YOUR PROPOSAL SHOULD BE MORE THAN PRETTY PHOTOS. The true magic lies in the authenticity of the moment, not in how perfectly it’s staged. When the moment is filled with genuine emotion, nervous smiles, heartfelt words, and the raw beauty of your surroundings, it becomes far more meaningful than any posed shot. Photos will reflect that natural joy and excitement, capturing the real love you share. Let the proposal be a deeply personal experience first, where the love between you shines brighter than any backdrop. The best memories are those that live in your heart, not just in a photograph. 3. DECOR or SIMPLICITY? Lapland's wilderness shine in simplicity, it allows the focus to remain on the love and connection you share. In the quiet elegance of simplicity, nothing distracts from the raw emotion of the proposal, the words, the setting, and the feeling of being entirely present with each other. Simplicity embraces the purity of the moment, letting the natural surroundings or the intimacy between you be the only backdrop needed. Simplicity lets love take center stage, creating an atmosphere that feels effortless and real. 4.WHEN TO START PLANNING? Winter (December to March): If you’re dreaming of a snowy wonderland, start planning 3-6 months in advance. This allows time to secure accommodations, activities, and any special experience you want to include. Autumn (August to October): For proposals amid stunning autumn colors, start planning 2-3 months in advance. This timing will help you choose the best weeks for vibrant foliage. 5. BOOK YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER FIRST. Booking your photographer before you start planning your proposal is a wise decision. Popular photographers, especially in sought-after locations like Lapland, can get booked up quickly, especially during peak seasons. By securing your photographer early, you ensure that you have someone talented and experienced. Once you have your photographer lined up, you can collaborate with them to tailor your proposal plans. They can provide insights on the best locations, lighting conditions, and times of day. A photographer who understands the intimacy of this moment (Hi there! ) can blend into the background, allowing for candid shots of the proposal and genuine reactions. This authenticity will reflect the true emotions of the moment. By prioritizing your photographer, you set the foundation for a beautifully documented proposal, ensuring that you can cherish those memories for a lifetime. 6.BEST LOCATIONS TO PROPOSE IN LAPLAND. Levi Levi offers a chairlift ride to the summit, allowing you to enjoy stunning panoramic views without breaking a sweat. Pyhä - Luosto Less commercialized than other destinations, allowing for a more intimate experience. You can find quiet spots amidst the natural beauty, perfect for a private proposal away from crowds. Sonka Located just a 25-minute drive from Rovaniemi, Sonka offers a short and easy hike to the hilltop, where you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views and a peaceful, secluded atmosphere. Riisitunturi National Park Known for its beautiful fell landscapes and wintery spruce trees covered in snow, Riisitunturi offers a magical setting for a winter proposal. Ruka Ruka is an idyllic spot for a proposal, surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of Lapland. For those seeking a bit of adventure, the Valtavaara Trail offers a stunning hike with unforgettable scenery. 7. HOW TO PROPOSE WITH THE NORTHERN LIGHTS? The Northern Lights are a breathtaking natural phenomenon, but they’re also unpredictable. Even during the best season, they might not appear for several days in a row, so planning your proposal around them can be really risky. No one can guarantee you’ll see them on a specific date. Auroras depend entirely on weather and solar activity, flexibility is key. Set aside at least three days together to give you the best possible chance to witness them. Avoid booking a big Northern Lights tour, sitting cramped in a bus, stopping on the roadside with cars passing and groups of people around you isn’t exactly the intimate setting you’d want for a proposal. We’ll also make sure to have a meaningful backup plan for a daytime proposal on your final day, just in case the weather doesn’t cooperate. Spending several days together not only increases your chances of seeing the Northern Lights, but also gives you time to truly experience Lapland like a local. Think of it as three magical days exploring Lapland with your local friend, discovering hidden places, enjoying the quiet beauty of nature, and creating memories that go far beyond the proposal itself. 8. ACTIVITIES 1. Husky Sledding Adventure Book a husky sledding tour through the snowy wilderness. After the ride, propose surrounded by the pristine landscape and the sounds of excited huskies. 2. Snowshoeing or Hiking Take a snowshoeing or hiking trip to a scenic viewpoint. As you reach a breathtaking overlook or a tranquil forest clearing, take a moment to express your love and pop the question. 3. Reindeer Sleigh Ride Enjoy a traditional reindeer sleigh ride through the snow. After the ride, you can propose in a picturesque spot, perhaps with warm blankets and a hot drink. 4. Snowmobiling Adventure Embark on a snowmobiling tour through the stunning winter landscape. After an exhilarating ride, stop in a beautiful, remote location to propose, surrounded by the tranquility of nature. 5. Skiing Spend a day skiing on the pristine slopes of Lapland. At the top of a mountain or a scenic viewpoint, take a moment to enjoy the view and propose while surrounded by the breathtaking landscape. 6. Bonfire Under the Stars Organize a private bonfire in a scenic spot. Enjoy a warm fire, hot cocoa, and marshmallows, and propose under the stars for a magical, intimate atmosphere. 7. Private Dinner Arrange for a private dinner in a cozy cabin or yurt. Create a romantic setting with candles and fairy lights. 8. Sunset Proposal Plan your proposal around sunset, find a viewpoint to enjoy the changing colors of the sky together before you ask the question. 9. HOW TO KEEP YOUR PROPOSAL A SECRET? Create a cover story: Tell your partner the trip is purely for sightseeing or a special getaway, like a celebration of something else (e.g., birthday, anniversary). Present your outings as typical vacation activities without hinting at the proposal. Keep your photographer incognito: There are several discreet ways to have a photographer capture your proposal without arousing suspicion. One option is to have the photographer pose as a guide, I even have a mock tour-company name you can use as a cover, or as a fellow tourist if the activity involves a provider. Another is to have the photographer positioned at the agreed location to shoot from a distance. And if arranging a photo session wouldn’t seem unusual to your partner, that can also serve as the perfect cover. Hide the ring (if you have one) : Your partner will most likely share a suitcase with you, so make sure to hide it in a place where they won't go looking for something. Swap the ring box for a slim, inconspicuous one that won’t create a bulge or draw attention. You can even use a small pouch or zippered wallet to make it less obvious. Remember to always carry valuable items with you during travel , as checked-in luggages can get frequently lost or delayed. 10. ITINERARY EXEMPLE DAY 1 : 10.30 : Meeting at your accommodation & departure to the location. 11.00 : Hike to the hilltop. 11.30 : Proposal at sunrise. 11.45 : Hot cocoa and celebration. 12.00 : Hike down while taking portraits. 19.00 : Private dinner to spot Northern Lights. DAY 2 : 09.00 : Meeting at your accommodation & departure. 09.30 : Reindeer farm visit. YOUR ENGAGEMENT PHOTOGRAPHER IN LAPLAND Hi! ELOPEMENT ADVENTURE SESSION WEDDING GUIDE Plus GALLERIES ABOUT CONTACT PRICING Plus PYHÄ-LUOSTO NATIONAL PARK PROPOSAL Reed & Alison Reed first reached out to me to help plan his proposal to Alison during their holiday in Pyhä. After a video call, we agreed that a secluded open hut in Luosto would be the perfect, serene setting for such a special moment. The day began under the guise of a photography hiking tour. We ascended the hilltop, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of a frozen forest. At the summit of Luosto Fell, we paused to light a fire inside the cozy hut before stepping back outside to soak in the breathtaking views. As Alison admired the stunning landscape, Reed reached into his pocket, dropped to one knee, and delivered a heartfelt proposal that left us all speechless. We concluded this unforgettable moment by gathering around the crackling fire, sharing warm drinks and pastries, enveloped in the hut’s comforting glow. If a big wedding isn't for you, an intimate wedding in Lapland might just be the perfect choice! From booking an officiant to the best locations, keep reading! ELOPEMENT ADVENTURE SESSION WEDDING GUIDE Plus GALLERIES ABOUT CONTACT PRICING Plus HOW TO PLAN A WEDDING IN LAPLAND The guide to an intimate wedding in Finnish Lapland THINKING TO HAVE YOUR WEDDING IN LAPLAND? If you’re not into the whole big wedding thing, an intimate celebration is for you. Imagine saying your vows surrounded by peaceful nature and breathtaking views. This kind of setting gives you the space to be fully present, celebrate your love in a way that’s true to you , and ditch the rulebook completely. If you’re drawn to wild landscapes, crave something intimate, and want your wedding to reflect who you really are, Lapland might just be the perfect place. I'm Marion, a local photographer, I help couples planning their wedding here in Lapland. My mission is to ensure that your experience is not only beautiful but also authentic and true to the unique connection you share. Together we’ll create memories that you'll cherish for a lifetime. WHY YOU WOULD WANT TO HAVE AN INTIMATE WEDDING IN LAPLAND NATURAL WONDERS From the vibrant autumn colors, to the northern lights, to the serene snow-covered landscapes of winter and the Midnight Sun in summer, Lapland is a land of breathtaking natural wonders, making your wedding an out of ordinary experience no matter the season. PRISTINE REGION With 7 National Parks and 5 million hectares of forest, Lapland is the perfect destination for couples seeking pristine nature. Lapland is considered the most peaceful place in Europe to its vast, uninhabited wilderness and low population density, creating a sense of serenity and privacy that is hard to find elsewhere. FREEDOM TO EXPLORE In Lapland, the unique concept of Everyman's Right opens the door to experiences in nature. It allows couples to celebrate a wedding in breathtaking landscapes, free from many of the usual venues costs and permits. LEGAL REQUIREMENTS TO GET MARRIED. As a foreigner, a civil wedding ceremony in Lapland involves several steps and requires specific documentation (I will accompany you throughout the process) . If the idea of going through the paperwork is too daunting, a legal ceremony in your home country and a symbolic ceremony filled with meanings in Lapland is also an option. Documents Required 1. Both parties need valid passports. 2. Certificate of no impediments (CNI) : You need a document from your home country proving that you are legally free to marry. 3. All documents should be in English or Finnish. If they’re not, you may need to have them translated and possibly legalized or apostilled. Booking your officiant The local register office will need to review your documents of no impediment before the ceremony. The officiant can travel almost anywhere for the celebration. I’ll take care of finding your civil officiant for you, so you can focus on what truly matters and leave the legalities to me. Final Steps After the wedding, you'll get an official marriage certificate to register the marriage in your home country. This may be necessary for changing your name or updating your marital status. Who can get married in Finnish Lapland? You do not need to be a resident, but you do need to comply with the legal requirements. You will need to be over 18 years old and have two witnesses at least 15 years old. Same sex marriages are celebrated. THE BEST TIME OF YEAR FOR A WEDDING IN LAPLAND Winter wedding (December to March) During these months, Lapland is covered in snow, offering an ethereal atmosphere with the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights. However, be prepared for very cold temperatures, limited daylight hours. Summer wedding (June to Mid-August) Lapland experiences the midnight sun with 24 hours of daylight, warmer temperatures, and lush green landscapes. This season is ideal for outdoor ceremonies and exploring nature. Keep in mind that there will be no Northern Lights. Autumn wedding (End of August to October) For a quieter, picturesque setting with stunning fall foliage, autumn is an excellent choice. The golden colors provide beautiful sceneries , and the longer nights offer a chance to see the Northern Lights. It is the perfect season for a full wedding day under the open skies! THE BEST LOCATIONS Riisitunturi National Park In winter, Riisitunturi turns into a magical wonderland. The park is famous for its snow-covered spruce trees, called "tykky," which bend under weight of the snow, creating dreamy, fairytale scenes. With the beautiful white backdrop. There are great trails for winter hikes and snowshoeing, perfect for couples looking for incredible landscapes without crazy hiking. Highlights A ceremony under the slopping bogs Dog sledding Northern Lights Spotting Kuusamo Kuusamo is an absolute gem for adventurous and outdoorsy couples. The region flourish with incredible locations such as Valtavaara, Konttainen or Oulanka National Park. The peaceful atmosphere invites deep connections. Highlights Downhill Skiing in Ruka Stay in a traditional log cabin Hiking Pyhä-Luosto This small village sits on the edge of a national park, surrounded by dramatic fells, untouched forests, and frozen lakes. It’s the perfect choice for those who want to escape the crowds but still want to enjoy iconic Lapland activities and commodities. Highlights Stay at Kurula Resort for a luxurious retreat Try a traditional sauna before ice dipping Ice climbing Snowmobiling Ylläs-Pallas It’s one of the most tranquil parts of Lapland. Far from busy tourist areas, you can find hidden spots for a deeply personal ceremony. The park is vast, so it’s easy to find a quiet place where it’s just the two of you (plus a photographer and maybe a celebrant!). Highlights Cross country Skiing Try winter mountain biking Rent a rowing boat on the lake in summer Rovaniemi It is the most popular destination in Finnish Lapland, thanks to its easy accessibility and international airport. It’s a convenient choice for couples traveling with young children or hosting guests, as the city offers a wide range of accommodations, vendors, and activities. However, during the winter season, some areas can get quite crowded. Having the right person to plan alongside you is essential, I will help you discover the intimate side of Lapland and steer you away from overly commercialized spots . Highlights Snowmobiling Ice floating Ice skating in the forest Rent a traditional Kota to host your wedding dinner GUESTS or JUST THE TWO OF YOU? Intimacy and personal preference Think about how you truly envision your wedding day. If your dream is an intimate, deeply personal experience without the hassles of a traditional wedding, then having no guests might be the perfect choice. But if the idea of excluding your loved ones is heartbreaking, then inviting a few carefully chosen guests becomes a meaningful decision. Budget Accounting for travel and accommodation costs for guests is important. Decide if your budget can accommodate these additional expenses. Remember that a smaller guest list or no guests at all can significantly reduce costs, allowing you to allocate more funds to other aspects of the wedding or honeymoon. Climate & Accessibility If you're thinking about a winter wedding in Lapland and inviting guests, be mindful that the extreme cold can limit your options. Overall, having guests might require some compromises in your wedding experience, so think about what matters most to you and prioritize accordingly. WHEN SHOULD YOU START PLANNING Wedding with guests 12–18 months before: Choose your season and date Book your venue and key vendors (photographer, caterer) Inform guests early so they can plan travel 9–12 months before: Reserve accommodation Arrange transport (flights, transfers, car rentals) Book entertainment and activities 6–9 months before Send invitations Finalize menu and ceremony details Confirm officiant and timeline 3–6 months before: Handle legal paperwork Finalize travel and RSVPs Prepare guest info packs (weather tips, local info) Tips: Book early, winter dates fill fast. Use local vendors who know Lapland’s conditions. Wedding with no guests 6–12 months before: Pick your date and season Book your photographer, venue or cabin, and any local vendors (officiant, makeup, flowers) Start paperwork for legal marriage if needed 3–6 months before: Finalize travel plans and accommodation Plan ceremony details Arrange extra experiences (snowmobile, sauna, husky ride) 1–2 months before: Confirm all bookings and check weather prep (layers, boots, etc.) Tips: Winter dates book fast, start early if you want snowy scenery. Local vendors know the best secret spots and light conditions. THE BEST AIRBNBS TO HOST A WEDDING IN LAPLAND Your choice of accommodation plays a big role in your destination wedding, it sets the atmosphere for your entire stay, from the quiet moments of getting ready to the joy of your celebration. Sometimes, you might even find the perfect ceremony spot right outside your Airbnb! When choosing where to stay, look for a place surrounded by nature, away from the city’s noise, where you can truly feel the magic of Lapland and that intimate atmosphere you’re dreaming of. At the same time, keep accessibility in mind. If you’d like to discover some of the best Airbnbs in Lapland, send me a message and I’ll share my own private, curated list of favorites. WHAT YOUR WEDDING DAY Could look like QUIETLY GETTING READY Soft light, quiet laughter, slow breaths. In your little cottage, love hums gently, the calm before the “I do.” WRITING YOUR VOWS Write your vows slowly, from the heart. Think of the quiet moments, the laughter, the challenges, and the love that brought you here. These are your vows, your story, spoken aloud. THE FIRST LOOK Your heart races, your breath catches, and the moment you see your partner, everything feels exactly as it should be. ON THE ROAD The road stretches ahead, quiet and endless. Snow drifts softly across the trees, and the world feels still, just you and the promise of where you’re headed. THE CEREMONY You stand together, hearts full, hands intertwined. Every word, every glance feels timeless. Surrounded by nature’s quiet, this is the moment everything becomes real. DINNER On the shore of a peaceful lake, you dine around the fire of a glass igloo. You can contact me and we'll discuss your wedding and how to start planning for your day. 2. Do you provide witnesses if we want to get married with no guest? Of course! I’ll happily be one of your witnesses, and I’ll also arrange the second so you don’t have to worry about a thing. 3. Can same sex couples get married in Finland? Yes! 4. Can we get married in Lapland with family and friends? Yes, absolutely. I would just add that a wedding, even a small one, with family and friends feels quite different from getting married just the two of you. Both are beautiful experiences in their own way: one is about celebrating your love surrounded by the people who matter most, while the other is about deep intimacy, where the entire day belongs only to you two. It really comes down to what feels most meaningful to you. 5. How can we include family and friends from home? We can set up a tripod with a phone broadcasting live your ceremony. This is a wonderful way to have your loved ones included while preserving an intimate experience for the two of you. 6. Is the marriage celebrated in Finland recognized in my home country? Yes, generally a marriage legally performed in Finland is recognized internationally. However, the exact process may vary depending on your home country. After the ceremony, you’ll receive an official Finnish marriage certificate, which you can use to register your marriage back home.

The couple was peaceful, present in the moment and embracing their emotions. The couple started by having a first look on the quiet frozen lake nearby the farm. The ceremony took place in an ancestral Kota where they exchanged their vows. They later had dinner inside the main building, where we could observe the reindeers laying by the windows. The organization is signed by Lapland Romance. BACK TO GALLERIES
