FINLAND ELOPEMENT GUIDE

How to elope in Finland in 2026-2027

Couple eloping in Finland

FOR THE NATURE LOVING COUPLES

The ancient forests, thousands of lakes, rugged arctic fells, archipelago coastline make Finland one of Europe's last great wilderness destinations for couples seeking an adventurous elopement.

A decade ago, I took my first trip to one of Finland's northernmost national parks and instantly fell in love with its raw beauty. Before long, I made it my home.

If you seek an elopement far from the crowds, surrounded by silence and nature, Finland is the perfect place to celebrate your story.

YOUR FINLAND ELOPEMENT AND WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

Hi! I'm Marion, your elopement and intimate wedding photographer based in Finland. My role goes far beyond taking photographs. I'll guide you to breathtaking locations and show you a side of Finland I fell in love with a decade ago.

Together, we'll create a day that feels like the adventure of a lifetime, surrounded by the silence and wild nature of the happiest, or shall I say, quietest country in the world.

THE BEST SEASON TO ELOPE IN FINLAND

A couple eloping in Finland in autumn

AUTUMN (SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER)

The landscapes are changing colors, turning from green to deep oranges and burgundy, the nights are crisp and the light moodier, this is the most comfortable and photogenic season of all! If I would plan my own elopement in Finland, I would choose this season for the mild temperatures, unlimited adventures, the landscapes are jaw dropping, It's a very quiet - tourist free season, plus it's one of the best time of year to see the Northern Lights!

couple eloping in winter in Finland

WINTER (DECEMBER-FEBRUARY)

You'll experience well below freezing temperatures, if you're looking for a winter elopement, the North of Finland is a winter wonderland 5 months of the year. Above the arctic circle, the daylight is extremely short, January is the best time to experience the beautiful shades of pastel pink and blue from the polar nights. I think it's one of the most beautiful and magical winter time! December to February are the busiest time of year for tourism.

A couple eloping in Finland in spring

SPRING (MARCH-MAY)

Spring is a great time if you're wanting a bit of snow, but don't want the freezing temperatures of deep winter. The sun comes back, the snow and ice melts, this is Finn's favorite time of year to go skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing. I would aim for March for the best spring experience.

A couple eloping in Finland in summer

SUMMER (JUNE-AUGUST)

The season of the Midnight Sun and lush landscapes. Summer in Finland offers endless daylight, vibrant green forests, beautiful archipelago coastlines, and countless lakes. It's also one of the quietest times of the year to visit, you'll enjoy many of the country's most beautiful places almost entirely to yourselves.

SYMBOLIC or LEGAL CEREMONY IN FINLAND?

Finland is one of the few countries in Europe where you can legally get married almost anywhere, you're not limited to a church or city hall. Officiants even often hike or participate to activities with us! Finland is one of the only Nordic countries where civil ceremonies can be held so freely in nature.

Better yet, civil ceremonies in Finland are far from impersonal, most officiants are happy to co-create a meaningful and personal ceremony that reflects your relationship and your journey.

Of course, a symbolic ceremony is always an option too. Many of my couples choose one for the complete freedom it offers, allowing them to exchange their vows in total privacy, with no one else present but the two of them.

HOW TO LEGALLY GET MARRIED IN FINLAND

As a foreigner, a legally binding ceremony involves several steps and requires specific documentation (I will accompany you throughout the process). If the idea of going through the paperwork is too daunting, a legal ceremony in your home country and a symbolic ceremony filled with meanings in Finland is also an option.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

1. Both parties need valid passports.
2. Certificate of no impediments (CNI) : You need a document from your home country proving that you are legally free to marry.
3. All documents should be in English or Finnish. If they’re not, you may need to have them translated and possibly legalized or apostilled.

BOOKING YOUR OFFICIANT
The local register office will need to review your documents of no impediment before the ceremony. The officiant can travel almost anywhere for the celebration. I’ll take care of finding your civil officiant for you, so you can focus on what truly matters and leave the legalities to me.

THE FINAL STEP

After the wedding, you'll get an official marriage certificate to register the marriage in your home country. This may be necessary for changing your name or updating your marital status.

WHO CAN GET MARRIED IN FINLAND

You do not need to be a resident of Finland to get married here. However, you must meet the legal requirements : being at least 18 years old and having two witnesses who are at least 15 years old. Finland also fully recognizes and celebrates same-sex marriages.

At the heart of Finnish culture, it has long symbolized cleansing and new beginnings. Traditionally, brides take a bridal sauna (morsiussauna), surrounded by close family and friends, as a ritual to mark the transition into married life. You'll find some very unique saunas all over the country, Gondola lift sauna, Sauna boat, smoke sauna, hilltop sauna, you name it!

ICE CLIMBING
If you're looking for an adrenaline shot, plan an ice climbing session after your ceremony. Using crampons and ice axes, you'll climb frozen waterfalls and towering walls of ice. Ice climbing is accessible to beginner or experienced climber.

SAILING
Sail through Finland's archipelago, you'll find your ceremony spot amongst thousands of forested islands, quiet coves, or elope aboard a private sailboat, surrounded by nothing but the sound of the wind and the waves.

HIKING/TREKKING
Hiking is the best way to reach Finland's most remote and secluded places. Carry your backpack with your attire tucked, get ready in a National Park rented cabin, and exchange your vows in the surrounding wilderness, spend the night and celebrate with a
lakeside sauna and bonfire under the stars!
